I've never been to Hollywood, but I would not be surprised to find in these parts a bronze statue natural height (1.93) of the great Stephen King. Yes, because one thing is certain: when a director and screenwriter are dry of ideas, the solution may be to draw liberally from the imagination of the writer in Portland. Seriously, are some forty films inspired by the tales of King, including huge hits such as "The Green Mile" and "The Shining" and "filmacci" like "The Langoliers."
Hafstrom focuses on the content of a story in the collection "Everything's possible" published in 2002 with good results both in the U.S. than here in Italy.
The protagonist of the story is Mike Enslin (Cusack), a writer sui generis, fond of paranormal phenomena, that reviews the most terrifying hotels in the world, challenging local beliefs. Enslin was a promising writer of fiction, but the premature death of her daughter, and the separation from his wife, led him to take this route made of loneliness and instability. One day, Enslin receives a postcard advertising the Dolphin hotel, the message that says: "Do not enter room 1408". Mike sees everything as a challenge already won, and decides to review the room where nobody here ha mai resistito più di una notte, e questo nonostante gli insistenti tentativi del direttore dell'albergo (Jackson) di far desistere lo scrittore dalla sua scellerata volontà.
Dentro quella stanza si nasconde il male più oscuro, che colpisce gli ospiti nel proprio profondo e li spinge al suicidio. La sfida di Mike questa volta sarà più difficile del previsto.
Non possiamo parlare di un "filmone", ne paragonarlo ai successi precedentemente citati, ma "1408" è un film scorrevole e tutto sommato piacevole. Da guardare senza troppe aspettative.
